Do it Yourself Plans - You Can Make Things You Need

DIY, or do it yourself, is a great source of satisfaction. Using your hands, and personal skills, you turn out what you want and save a lot of money as you do it. Yes, it is possible to make a big saving in cost and DIY may actually be the only method of getting the things you need. DIY plans can be found on the internet for just about anything you could want. The cost varies widely from absolutely free to fairly expensive.

Websites which give away plans usually will have more plans which are for sale, or alternatively payment may be derived from ads. Frequently the free plans which are offered will not be very up to date or of top quality. Sometimes you will find exceptions to this however. You may confirm this by performing an online search for the thing you need to find.

DIY plans are quite easily found in magazines of the crafts, woodworking and mechanical genre.

The newer magazine editions will of course have plans which are of modern design. Any special plan you want is unlikely to show up right away however. The exact plan you need is most likely to be found with a search of many back issues. The biggest problem now can be locating the older magazines. Most public libraries, especially in large cities, keep bound volumes of older magazines so this is a good place to begin your search. Bound editions of magazines from the nineteen fifties or earlier will probably be found. This is the most likely source for old plans.

Magazines with publishing dates up to and including 1963 are very nearly all copyright expired and are now in the public domain. Anyone can legally republish public domain material with no restriction. Up to the year 1963 only 28 year copyright terms were granted by the US copyright office. Renewal of the copyright during the 28th year was required or the publication became public domain material. The copyright ended if it was not renewed during the course of this final year. Publications, or any media, which are in the public domain cannot be copyrighted by anyone.

Plans and articles were as a rule published just once so the publication did not renew the copyright and the material entered the public domain. Periodicals dated before 1964 are nearly all in the public domain so the contents can be republished by anyone quite legally. This kind of magazine includes scientific and mechanics periodicals as well as woodworking and certain crafts magazines.

Plans from these older magazines are quite prominent on the internet for this reason. The biggest problem facing anyone looking for a certain plan is to locate a copy of the old magazine which contains suitable material. To find the old magazine wanted can be very difficult and it is generally easier, and less costly, to buy a copy of the plan rather than to spend a lot of valuable time searching for a free copy.

John Mowatt is a do it yourselfer from wayback. It started when as a kid he couldn't afford to buy fishing lures so he made his own spinners and spoons from old table spoons and soon found that he could even sell them to other anglers for a bit of pocket money. Thus began a lifetime of interest in the DIY lifestyle which is so much more satisfying than buying everything you need--not to mention a lot less costly also. Hundreds of old DIY plans were accumulated over a period of many years for building every kind of thing from A to Z. Instructions for doing all kinds of interesting things were collected also. Would you like to know how to cut wood with a piece of paper? Or maybe how to cut glass into all kinds of shapes with a pair of scissors? Free info like that and reprints of these old plans at a very reasonable price are now being made available and you can read all about them, and find a lot of free tips, in this eBay blog:
